Today i saw a Ted Talk, the person who spoke at the talk was an urban designer, his name is Peter Calthorpe, he is an award winnig.
Peter giving the speech
Now let´s talk about what he spoke. He started talking about climate changes, and how the population of the world is growing, and that the cities are going to be able to adapt that to their design, the population is going to be 3 billion people in some years. The cities nowadays are sprawl, it segragates people and separate them from nature, it causes a lot of problems to the enviroment and to the people.
We, as designers and architects, have to design a city with a compact enviroment, where people know each other, and have time for themselves, and the factor of moving to work or go to school is just a factor, not a time consummig factor. We have to create a city where people wants to go for a walk, and where the public space is going to be a social enviroment, not a place where people have to find a place for themselfs fighting against eachother. We have to get back where the sense of community was everything, when people knew who were their neighbours, where the kids used to play in the streets. Nowadays, the cars go so fast that the kids can not go out whitout an adult supervision. We have to give the proper space for sustainable mobility, to reduce the carbon footprint, so we can live longer in this planet, so we can leave a good place to live for the future generations.
Vitoria Gasteiz, a very sustainable city in Europe
Nowadays, people are very selfish, the politicians who run the first world countries, the ones who manage the worls only think about money, not sustainable, they think about today, not tomorrow, we have to create awareness so the next generation can keep this fight, the fight that we are living today.
